Unfolding the white piece of paper, Aria stared hard, if making the hardest decision of her life. Several minute of contemplating what to do Aria folded the piece of paper up and tucked it into her red clutch. Letting out a breath she bounced off of her sofa making her way to her front door. Clutching her car keys and white denim jacket Aria locked the door behind her making her way down to the garage. Slipping into her white mini cooper convertible x47, Aria hesitated to turn on the engine. Biting her lip she stared at her reflection in the rearview mirror. "You can do this" she told her self, "You can do this Aria." Closing her eyes for a split second she pushed the ignition and reversed out of her parking spot.
Aria had never been this nervous about anything before. She wasn't the adventurous type, nor was she a risk taker, but after the argument she got in with her classmate Aria was out to redeem justice and prove a point. Turning left through an intersection the wind blew through Aria's dark brown hair. Making a sharp turn Aria slammed on her breaks. Not the best driver she had almost gone through a red light. "Sorry!" she yelled at the pedestrian she almost hit. Smiling innocently she slammed on the gas as the light flickered green. Turning down a dimmed street Aria pulled out the folded up paper from her clutch and read the address on the paper. "324..." she read allowed squinting at the paper then up to the numbers on the buildings. Parallel parking in between two larger cars Aria bit hard on her lip as she parked nervously in between the two cars.
Locking her car door Aria looked up at the brightly-lit sign "Jay's Karaoke Bar!" Letting out a short breath Aria stepped into the bar. Unlike other karaoke bars she's been to this one was smaller, and more mellow. Dimly lit with small tables and chairs staggered around the bar floor. There were probably around two dozen people in the bar, mostly Aria's peers. Two girls in high-ponytails waved Aria down to go sit with them. This was it, time to prove a point. Earlier that week Aria had argued that introverts were just as fun as extroverts, and just because they aren't as outgoing as extroverts doesn't mean they couldn't have just as much fun. "Hey Caroline, Debbie, guys" Aria smiled as she joined the group of college students. "Hey Aria" a cute boy said as he winked at the girl making her blush slightly. "We didn't think you'd come Aria. Glad you did though" the one ponytailed girl Caroline began, "The competition tonight are pros, so maybe you shouldn't be too glad" Debbie the second ponytailed girl finished. "I think I can manage" Aria said sharply taking a seat and waving down the bartender to order a drink for herself before taking the stage.
The competition was definitely interesting that night. Two boys and a girl were in que before Aria and Karaoke at this pub was definitely taken more seriously than any other places she's been to. No jokes, no messing up, no bad voices. Aria tried to smile during their performances but she was definitely intimated. Maybe she wasn't up for the job after all she is a shy girl. Clapping as the girl before Aria finished her song Aria picked up her pint of beer and finished it before approaching the stage.
Trembling towards the stage Aria wasn't sure any words were going to come out of her mouth when the music started. Tripping slightly Aria managed to catch herself from falling while going up the stairs. "Relax Aria... It's just a song" Aria had been put into music lessons since she was six years old. But she never once performed in front of her peers, especially her College peers. Sure she performed for her family and close friends, but never strangers. What if she wasn't any good? What if her parents and family friends were bluffing at all of her recitals. Smiling at the stage manager Aria shook her head to begin. The spot light nearly blinded Aria when they flashed it on. Startled she stepped backwards almost falling over once again. The crowd chuckled, and Aria joined them speaking into the microphone. "Who knew Karaoke could be so dangerous" her peers all laughed except for Caroline and Debbie who looked are Aria disappointedly as if they wanted her to fall. Nodding her head once more towards the stage manager Aria was ready to sing.
"When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold..."
Stopping abruptly the tempo of the song was all wrong, she wasn't how Aria had known the song. Aria looked at the stage manager confused and scurried over to him whispering into his ear. With a chuckle he nodded and turned off the spotlight. The stage was black and silent for several minutes. Her peers were murmuring amongst themselves wondering what had happened to Aria. Seconds later the spotlight turned back on and Aria was sitting in front of a old black piano smiling. The microphone propped on a base Aria smirked at the audience "Wanted to try something a little more my pace, hope you guys don't mind" Mike the cute boy from before whistled and clapped for Aria the rest of the bar followed. A trail began to play on the piano soft but soundly Aria began to sing,
"When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold
When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood’s run stale..."
Pushing her fingers harder onto the piano she began to play harder and her voice began to raise as the music behind the words did too.
"I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide
No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come"
Looking up from the keys Aria's eyes looked at the audience as they watched and listened to her play the song. Her voice lifting higher now the words flew through her mouth angelically. Her voice was nothing special, but it was so old and proper sounding when she sang as if she was from a pat life.
"When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide..."
A strange emphasis on the word demons trembled through Aria's voice as she sang the song. She knew why she had picked this song. Like an introvert Aria is shy, and wholesome but she has another side of her that no one in College knew, she was part demon, but this scared her and much like the song she feared anyone getting too close because of the darkness inside of her.
"It's where my demons hide,
It's where my demons hide."
Aria looked at the final note on the piano and let out a short breath. Looking back to the audience Aria bit her lip nervous at their reaction to her performance. A praise of applause came from the crowd. Aria couldn't help but smile. Her face turned a bright pink. She did it, she actually did it, and she was good. Pushing off of the piano chair Aria moved a strand of her hair out of her face and walked towards the stairs. Tripping over her feet again, Aria stumbled down the stairs. Luckily this time though a stranger caught Aria before embarrassing herself.
